Useful Information

1. Is there any overhead charge of SIRI and ZIRI for different research grant schemes / contract research / consultancy projects?

Our two research institutes in Mainland, SIRI and ZIRI, follow the current university overhead recovery rates of 15%, or whatever the grant allows.

2. Apart from overhead recovery charges, does SIRI or ZIRI impose any other charges on the research projects, e.g., rental charges for use of office, lab space, etc.?

No, apart from overhead charges, there are no other charges by SIRI or ZIRI.

3. I am an academic staff of HKU.  Am I required to have an employment contract or other connections with SIRI or ZIRI in order to apply for Mainland research grants?

The University supports HKU full time academic staff at the rank of Assistant Professor or above to apply for Mainland research grants as PIs via SIRI or ZIRI. At the moment, you do not need to have an employment contract with either SIRI or ZIRI.  You do need to be a member (“an affiliate”) of the Research Institute (either SIRI or ZIRI) that will serve as the entity to submit your grant proposals.

4. Can I use two affiliations, SIRI and ZIRI to apply for the same grant application in the same application year, so I have two chances?

No. This is not allowed by the funding bodies.  You can only use one entity to submit your grant proposals. In particular, for NSFC programmes, if you apply for NSFC-RGC via HKU, you cannot even apply separately for NSFC via SIRI or ZIRI in the same year.
